Kris Defoort & Dreamtime
The trancelike music grabs you immediately at your collar. The first part of the double-album is a quartet-recording with Kris Defoort (piano), Nicolas Thys (double bass), Dré Pallemaerts (drums) and the great American tenor player Mark Turner.
Defoort effortlessly switches from his intimate trio to big band on his many releases such as ‘Sketches of Belgium’, ‘KD’s Decade Live’ and ‘Variations on A Love Supreme’. His collaboration with choreographer Fatou Traoré led to the epic suite in five ‘passages’ which features Kris Defoort’s ensemble Dreamtime, eleven wonderful musicians. Flute, oboe, cello, brass and saxes around the piano-trio of KD’s Decade. Ranging from almost classical points of repose to fierce, joyful flurries of pure jazz. ‘Passages’ is difficult to define – indeed, to do so would limit the scope of this beautiful and remarkable work.
